Is Donald Trump trying to be the first Iranian president of the United States?
Remember president Ahmedinajhad of Iran? He used to say, “We will drive Israel into the sea”. His own people as well as seasoned middle-east watchers knew he didn’t mean it. He didn’t mean he would drive Israel into the sea. Clearly, that would be impossible. He was saying, “I’m strong, and I talk tough and I want your votes .” And Iranians gave him their votes.
“We’re going to build a wall, and we’ll make Mexico pay for it.”
Who said that? And what did he mean? Donald Trump didn’t mean he would build a wall and make Mexico pay for it. Only naïve voters and very clunky commentators couldn’t see that. He meant what Ahmedinajahd meant. He was saying, “I’m strong and I talk tough, and I want your votes.” And so many people voted for him that he will most probably be the next Republican candidate for president.
We Greeks have no trouble understanding that. We elected many leaders, many times over, who didn’t do what they said. One of them even explained the reason why. Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou was confronted by the head of the Greek Communist Party with the question of why he hadn’t done something he had often said he would do.
“Because those are things we say,” he told the communist leader, “Not things we do.”
Elementary, my dear comrade.
